The young Australian Davis Cup team scored an upset 3-2 victory over a full-strength USA team in the Davis Cup Quarter-Final held at Brisbane from 7-9 April.
The tie got off to a great start with Jordan Thompson defeating the USA’s top ranked player, Jack Sock, in 4 sets followed by Nick Kyrios downing John Isner in straight sets. Kyrgios out served his big-serving opponent sending down 15 aces to 9 from Isner.
The doubles rubber was a close match with the Americans prevailing in 5 sets to keep the tie alive however it was to no avail as Kyrgios despatched Sam Querry, again in straight sets, in the fourth rubber to secure the victory for Australia. Isner beat Groth in the dead fifth rubber.
Australia now goes into the semi-finals away against Belgium with Serbia playing France in the other semi.
